The Mautic vs. HubSpot vs. ActiveCampaign Decision: An Honest Take After 50+ Migrations
After migrating 50+ companies between marketing automation platforms, we’ve developed strong opinions about which platform is right for which business. The marketing automation market is crowded — Mautic, HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Customer.io, Iterable, Braze, and on and on. Here’s our honest take after watching 50+ clients try to make this decision.
The 5 questions that determine the right platform
Most platform-selection guides start by listing features. That’s the wrong starting point. Start with these 5 questions instead:
- What’s your contact volume? (under 10k vs. over 100k)
- What’s your email volume? (under 100k/month vs. over 1M/month)
- How many team members need access? (1-3 marketers vs. 10+ cross-functional)
- Do you need deep CRM integration? (email-only vs. sales + service + marketing)
- What’s your budget for tooling + implementation? (under $1k/mo vs. over $10k/mo)
Answer those honestly, and the right platform becomes much clearer.
Mautic: the open-source power play
Mautic is the open-source marketing automation platform. It’s what we use internally at 5 Kings, and it’s what we recommend for mid-market and enterprise brands with technical resources.
Where Mautic wins
- Free (self-hosted): The community edition is free forever. Enterprise support is paid.
- Unlimited contacts and emails: No per-contact pricing (just hosting costs).
- Full data ownership: Your database, your servers, your rules.
- No vendor lock-in: If you leave, your data is yours.
- Powerful segmentation and automation: Comparable to enterprise tools costing 10x more.
- Excellent API: Deep integrations with custom systems.
- Active community: Plugins for almost every use case.
Where Mautic loses
- Setup is non-trivial: Budget 2-6 weeks for a proper implementation including email deliverability.
- Self-hosting: You need a server admin (or a partner like us) to manage it.
- No hosted option for SMBs: If you don’t have technical resources, Mautic isn’t for you.
- Less polished UI: It’s not as pretty as HubSpot. It works, but it’s not delightful.
- Email deliverability is your problem: You need to set up SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and warm up sending IPs.
Mautic ideal customer
Contact volume: 10k-1M+. Email volume: 100k+/month. Has a dev team or agency partner. Values data ownership. Wants to avoid per-contact pricing.
HubSpot: the all-in-one marketing machine
HubSpot is the dominant all-in-one platform. Marketing Hub, Sales Hub, Service Hub, CMS Hub, and Operations Hub all share one database and one login. For growing companies that need all those pieces, HubSpot is hard to beat.
Where HubSpot wins
- All-in-one: Marketing + sales + service + CMS in one platform.
- Excellent UI/UX: Beautiful, intuitive, well-documented.
- Strong ecosystem: 1,000+ integrations in the HubSpot App Marketplace.
- Easy to scale: Start on the free CRM, upgrade as you grow.
- Powerful workflows: Visual workflow builder for complex automation.
- Great support: 24/7 phone, chat, email support on paid plans.
Where HubSpot loses
- Expensive at scale: Marketing Hub Pro starts at $890/month. Marketing Hub Enterprise is $3,200/month.
- Per-contact pricing escalates fast: Above 100k contacts, costs become prohibitive.
- Limited customizability: You can’t easily add custom fields, custom objects have limits.
- Data is in HubSpot: Migrating out is hard.
HubSpot ideal customer
Contact volume: under 50k. Email volume: under 500k/month. Wants the all-in-one platform. Has budget for $1k-$5k/month tooling. Wants to avoid implementation complexity.
ActiveCampaign: the SMB email + automation sweet spot
ActiveCampaign is the best mid-market email marketing + automation platform. It’s not as all-in-one as HubSpot, but it’s significantly cheaper and more flexible.
Where ActiveCampaign wins
- Powerful automation: Best-in-class visual workflow builder.
- Built-in CRM: Sales CRM included (lightweight but solid).
- Affordable: Plans start at $29/month. Up to 100k contacts is manageable cost.
- Easy to use: Less onboarding time than HubSpot or Mautic.
- Good integrations: 900+ integrations including major e-commerce platforms.
Where ActiveCampaign loses
- No full service hub: Customer service ticketing requires another tool.
- Limited CMS: No content management system like HubSpot’s CMS Hub.
- Reporting is basic: Compared to HubSpot, attribution reporting is shallow.
- Deliverability can be inconsistent: Some clients have seen issues with Gmail placement.
ActiveCampaign ideal customer
Contact volume: under 100k. Email volume: under 500k/month. Small marketing team. Wants powerful automation without HubSpot pricing.
Klaviyo: the e-commerce email specialist
Klaviyo is purpose-built for e-commerce. If you’re an e-commerce brand, Klaviyo should be on your shortlist.
Where Klaviyo wins
- E-commerce integrations are best-in-class: Native integrations with Shopify, Bigcommerce, WooCommerce.
- Pre-built e-commerce flows: Abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back — all out of the box.
- Revenue attribution: Tracks revenue per email, per flow, per segment.
- Predictive analytics: Churn risk, predicted next order date, expected spend.
- Strong deliverability: Klaviyo’s sending infrastructure is excellent.
Where Klaviyo loses
- E-commerce only: Bad fit for B2B, SaaS, or service businesses.
- Expensive at scale: Pricing scales aggressively above 50k contacts.
- Limited CRM features: Not designed for B2B sales workflows.
Klaviyo ideal customer
E-commerce brand with 5k-100k contacts. Wants revenue attribution on email. Has clean e-commerce data and product feed.
