Platform-Specific SEO

BigCommerce SEO services built for faceted catalogs, headless storefronts, and the BigCommerce SEO stack

Generic SEO playbooks break on BigCommerce. Faceted nav creates thousands of duplicate URLs, product schema is half-implemented, and the platform's "Other tab" metadata gets ignored by every plugin out there. We specialize in BigCommerce — from Blueprint legacy stores to headless Catalyst + Next.js builds — and our team has shipped 100+ BigCommerce SEO engagements since 2014.

Twelve platform-specific SEO disciplines we ship for BigCommerce stores

From Blueprint faceted-nav cleanup to headless Catalyst + Next.js edge SEO, we handle every BigCommerce SEO surface — and we do not run the same playbook across Shopify, Magento, and BC. Each platform has its own SEO traps.

BigCommerce Technical SEO Audit

Full platform-aware crawl. We catch the BC-specific issues generic audit tools miss.

  • Faceted-nav duplicate URL explosion (the #1 BC SEO killer)
  • Canonical chain audits through BC's product → category → brand hierarchy
  • Robots.txt audit (the trial-store / Disallow / mistake we still see in 2024)
  • WWW vs no-WWW redirect consistency
  • Sitemap validation (BC ships its own; we verify it isn't blocking pages)
🔗

URL Structure & Sitemap Hygiene

BigCommerce generates URLs automatically. We rewrite them for SEO without breaking checkout or existing rankings.

  • Clean category → subcategory → product hierarchy
  • Stop-word removal from URLs (this-is-best-deal → best-deal)
  • BC-generated sitemap validation + supplemental XML for blog and CMS pages
  • 301 redirect mapping for any URL changes
  • Hreflang tags for international BC storefronts
🏷

Product & Category Page On-Page SEO

BigCommerce's "Other tab" has been the most ignored SEO field on the platform for over a decade. We fill every product and category with platform-correct metadata.

  • Page Title (60 chars), Meta Description (155 chars), Meta Keywords (still respected by some engines)
  • H1 alignment with the product/category name (not the brand)
  • Product schema (Product, Offer, AggregateRating, BreadcrumbList)
  • Category-page unique intro copy (BC leaves these blank by default — Google reads them)
📋

Faceted Navigation & Canonical Strategy

The single most important BC SEO project. Default BigCommerce faceted nav creates 5x–50x more indexable URLs than your store has products. We fix it.

  • Robots-meta noindex on every filtered URL (color, size, price, brand combinations)
  • Self-referencing canonicals on the canonical category page
  • Cross-filter canonical consolidation
  • Edge SEO overlay for headless BC (Next.js ISR + canonical headers)

BigCommerce Site Speed & Core Web Vitals

BC stores are fast out of the box — until you stack 40 product images, a personalization tool, a reviews app, and a chat widget. We tune back.

  • Image lazy-loading + responsive srcset (BC supports both natively)
  • Critical-CSS extraction for BC Stencil themes
  • Third-party script audit (the silent LCP killer)
  • BC + Cloudflare edge caching strategy
  • LCP < 1.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.05 targets
📊

Product Schema & Rich Results

BigCommerce ships with basic Product schema but misses the rich-result surface. We expand it to the full SERP feature set.

  • Product, Offer, AggregateRating, BreadcrumbList, Review
  • FAQ schema on PDPs (Google merchant guidelines compliant)
  • HowTo schema on educational category pages
  • Organization + LocalBusiness markup
  • Google Merchant Center feed alignment with on-page schema
🔍

Keyword Research for BigCommerce Catalogs

We map keywords to your catalog structure — not the other way around. Every category, subcategory, and PDP gets a target query.

  • Category-page keyword mapping (head terms + long-tail modifiers)
  • PDP keyword cluster per product type
  • Competitor keyword gap analysis (against the top 3 BC competitors in your vertical)
  • Search-intent classification (transactional vs. informational)
  • Internal-link architecture built around keyword clusters

Category & PDP Content Production

BigCommerce stores with thin category descriptions lose to Shopify Plus competitors every quarter. We build the content layer.

  • Unique 200–400 word category intro copy (SEO + conversion)
  • PDP description rewrites (150–250 words with target keywords)
  • Buying-guide articles for top keyword clusters
  • Comparison content (vs competitor X, vs alternative Y)
  • Editorial calendar aligned to your catalog expansion
🌐

Headless BigCommerce + Next.js Edge SEO

BigCommerce Catalyst and the Storefront API let you run a fully headless storefront. We are the team that has shipped the most BC + Next.js SEO projects.

  • Edge SEO with ISR (Incremental Static Regeneration)
  • On-demand revalidation for catalog updates
  • Server-side canonicals, hreflang, and meta headers
  • BC Storefront API → Next.js App Router SEO integration
  • Vercel / Cloudflare Workers / Netlify Edge configuration
🏪

BigCommerce Multi-Storefront SEO

BigCommerce Enterprise supports multiple storefronts under one backend. We structure them for global SEO without cannibalization.

  • Hreflang cluster per storefront (en-US, en-GB, fr-FR, de-DE)
  • Currency + locale-aware canonicals
  • Per-storefront sitemap submission
  • Cross-storefront internal-link discipline
  • BC's native multi-storefront integration with our SEO overlay
📈

BigCommerce SEO Reporting & Attribution

GA4 + Search Console + BC's own analytics wired together. We build the dashboards your CFO will actually read.

  • Organic revenue attribution (assisted + last-click)
  • Keyword rank tracking (BC-specific keyword clusters)
  • Indexation monitoring (catches BC faceted-nav leaks early)
  • Core Web Vitals trends over time
  • Monthly CFO-ready report with revenue attribution
🛠

BigCommerce Migration SEO

Migrating to BigCommerce? From Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce, or Volusion — we preserve your rankings.

  • Pre-launch URL inventory + 301 mapping
  • Schema + meta migration (and correction — old CMSes ship broken schema)
  • Parallel-run monitoring for 30 days post-launch
  • Search Console validation against old URLs
  • Pre-launch disavow + post-launch recovery if rankings drop

Challenge

Source Orthopedic had decent paid traffic but virtually zero organic visibility. Product pages ranked beyond page 10 for every target term, and BigCommerce faceted navigation was creating 12,000+ duplicate-content URLs bleeding PageRank across the catalog.

What we did

Rebuilt site architecture around search-intent clusters. Deployed comprehensive product schema (Product, Offer, AggregateRating, BreadcrumbList), fixed canonical/duplicate issues from faceted nav, and built 28 high-quality buying-guide articles targeting long-tail medical-supply keywords with commercial intent. Result: organic went from a rounding error to the #1 revenue source.

5 Kings took our organic channel from a rounding error to our #1 revenue source. The team understands medical eCommerce compliance AND modern SEO — a rare combination.

Challenge

Texas Hunter had been running Google Ads for 3 years with a ROAS that had slowly degraded to 1.8x. Broad-match keyword waste, no audience segmentation, and product feed issues meant they were spending $40k/month to break even on paid acquisition.

What we did

Full BigCommerce Google Ads account restructure: switched from broad to exact + phrase match, layered in custom intent audiences, launched Performance Max campaigns with curated asset groups by product line, fixed the Merchant Center feed (disapprovals dropped from 180 to 4), and rebuilt BigCommerce category landing pages with CRO-tested layouts. Then layered on BigCommerce SEO for the long-tail game-feeder keywords to compound the paid wins.

We tried two other agencies before 5 Kings. The difference was the strategy depth — they rebuilt the account structure from the ground up rather than just adjusting bids.

Challenge

A 90-year-old CPG brand generating 89% of revenue through Amazon and grocery retail. Margins on Amazon were getting eaten by FBA fees and competition from private label knockoffs. They needed a DTC site that could rank organically for their branded product keywords and capture first-party data.

What we did

Built a brand-story-first homepage with SEO-driven product copy targeting long-tail pawpaw recipes, pawpaw health benefits, and pawpaw vs banana keywords. Built PDPs with FAQ + Product + Recipe schema. Used paid social to drive first-purchase and email automation to drive second purchase. Migrated email list from Mailchimp and built a loyalty program.

5 Kings helped us see the path off Amazon dependency. DTC is now 38% of revenue with higher margins and a real customer relationship.

FAQ

BigCommerce SEO questions we hear every week

Do you work on BigCommerce Blueprint (legacy) stores?

Yes. We still optimize Blueprint stores — they have unique SEO challenges (no ISR, slower theme performance, harder schema customization) but they are still common for established brands. About 30% of our BC engagements are Blueprint.

Can you do BigCommerce Catalyst + Next.js headless SEO?

Yes — this is a 5 Kings specialty. We have shipped more BC + Next.js headless SEO projects than most agencies. Edge SEO with ISR, on-demand revalidation, server-side canonicals, hreflang, and meta headers are all in our standard playbook.

What is faceted navigation and why is it the #1 BC SEO problem?

Faceted navigation lets users filter products by color, size, brand, price, etc. BigCommerce generates a unique URL for every combination. A store with 500 products can end up with 12,000+ indexable URLs that all return near-duplicate content. Google then has to crawl and rank all of them, which dilutes your PageRank and causes index bloat. The fix is robots-meta noindex on filtered URLs plus self-referencing canonicals on the canonical category. We do this on every engagement.

Do you work with BigCommerce Enterprise multi-storefront?

Yes. Multi-storefront SEO is one of our core offerings. We have shipped 15+ multi-storefront BC engagements covering en-US/en-GB/en-AU/fr-FR/de-DE/es-MX configurations. Hreflang discipline, per-storefront sitemaps, and currency-aware canonicals are in our standard playbook.

How long until I see results?

Most BC stores see meaningful movement in 90 days. The fastest signal is indexation cleanup (we typically see 30–70% reduction in indexed pages within 30 days, which concentrates PageRank). Organic traffic lift typically starts showing at month 3 and compounds through month 9. Our case study median is +18% organic traffic at month 9.

What does it cost?

BigCommerce SEO engagements start at $3,500/month for the audit + foundation phase (months 1–3), then $2,500/month for ongoing content + iteration. Project-based engagements (e.g., migration SEO, faceted-nav cleanup, schema deployment) are quoted per scope.

Do you also do BigCommerce PPC?

Yes — our PPC team is BC-experienced (Texas Hunter case study above is our BC PPC work). Most of our BC clients run both SEO + PPC because the keyword overlap is huge and the compounding effect on revenue is real.

Will you migrate my store to BigCommerce?

We do not do platform migrations in-house — we partner with two BigCommerce-certified implementation partners for that work. But once your store is on BC, we run the SEO. This is intentional — we want to be the team that owns organic revenue, not the team that ships a theme and disappears.
