The Challenge
240-member chamber on $4/month shared hosting with 6.2s page loads, no SSL, no content management, no member directory or event ticketing. Site crashed monthly and the executive director couldn't update anything without a developer.
Our Strategy
Migrated to managed WordPress hosting with Cloudflare CDN. Built a custom responsive theme with member directory, event ticketing, and gated member content. Set up WooCommerce for memberships and event tickets. Layered Mautic for renewal reminders and member newsletters.

Background
The Sunrise Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) non-profit business association representing 240+ member businesses across Sunrise, Florida. They needed a digital platform that could serve three distinct audiences simultaneously: prospective members researching the chamber, existing members accessing benefits, and the local community searching for member businesses and chamber events. Their previous site was hosted on a shared GoDaddy plan with no CDN, no staging, and no clear path for the chamber staff to make content updates without developer help.
The Challenge
The chamber was running on a legacy WordPress install that was 4 years out of date, hosted on a $4/month shared plan with no caching layer. Page load times averaged 6.2 seconds on mobile. The site had no SSL certificate, no mobile-responsive design, and the events calendar was a static PDF uploaded monthly. The chamber’s executive director wanted to launch a member directory, event ticketing, and a paid membership tier — none of which were possible on the existing infrastructure.
Specific pain points
- Site went down 3-4 times per month due to resource limits on shared hosting
- PageSpeed Insights scored 38/100 mobile, 62/100 desktop
- No way for chamber staff to add events without editing raw PHP
- Member directory was a hand-coded HTML page that hadn’t been updated in 8 months
- Zero email automation — every renewal reminder went out manually
- No e-commerce for event tickets or membership dues
Our Strategy
We split the engagement into three phases: infrastructure rebuild, content migration + design refresh, and feature rollout. The chamber needed hosting that could grow with them without quarterly cost surprises, so we moved them from shared hosting to managed cloud hosting with a dedicated resource tier.
Phase 1: Infrastructure (Weeks 1-2)
Migrated the WordPress site to a managed hosting environment with server-side caching, automatic daily backups, free SSL via Let’s Encrypt, and a staging environment. Set up Cloudflare in front of the site as a CDN and WAF. Configured uptime monitoring with 1-minute interval checks and SMS alerts to the executive director. Page load time dropped from 6.2 seconds to 1.8 seconds.
Phase 2: Design + Content (Weeks 3-6)
Rebuilt the theme on a mobile-first responsive framework. Migrated 7 years of event archive, 240+ member listings, and 14 years of chamber news into a structured custom post type architecture. Created member-only gated content areas. Set up Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and Bing Webmaster Tools. Verified the chamber on Google Business Profile and 11 directory sites.
Phase 3: Features (Weeks 7-10)
Rolled out WooCommerce for event ticketing and membership dues with recurring subscriptions. Built a member directory using a custom post type + facet search. Set up Mautic for transactional + marketing emails (renewal reminders, event announcements, monthly newsletter). Configured Stripe ACH for the 22% of members who prefer to pay by bank transfer.
Results (12 months post-launch)
- Uptime: 99.98% (vs. 91% on previous host) — zero unscheduled outages in the past 6 months
- Page speed: 1.8s average mobile load (vs. 6.2s), PageSpeed Insights 91/100 mobile
- Membership renewals: 87% (vs. 71% previous year) — automated renewal reminders drove most of the lift
- Event ticket sales: 142 paid events processed through WooCommerce in 12 months, $48,000 gross
- Member directory: 240 listings, 38,000 unique visitors in year one
- Email engagement: 42% average open rate on member newsletter (vs. 18% industry baseline for chambers)

Why It Worked
The chamber’s previous site was a static brochure that nobody could update. By pairing managed cloud hosting with a structured WordPress architecture and self-service content management, we turned it into a 24/7 marketing asset that the chamber staff can operate without our involvement. The recurring WooCommerce subscriptions paid for our setup fee within 8 months through improved renewal rates alone.
The hosting decision was the foundation: every other improvement (speed, features, automation) became possible once we got off shared hosting and onto managed cloud infrastructure. We continue to provide ongoing hosting management, security monitoring, and quarterly feature updates on retainer.
"5 Kings turned our website from something we were embarrassed by into our most valuable member-acquisition channel. The automated renewal reminders alone paid for the entire engagement in 8 months."— Brian Feuer, Executive Director, Sunrise Chamber of Commerce, Sunrise Chamber of Commerce
